I knew I would love earl grey hot chocolate before I even made it. If you love tea as much as I do, you'll love this tea-infused cozy drink. This earl grey hot chocolate is thick, creamy, and fragrant with bergamot with the richness of chocolate.

    Why you'll love this recipe

    • Thick and rich hot chocolate. This earl grey hot chocolate is akin to the luxurious drinking chocolate enjoyed in France and European countries. It's delicious if you love chocolate!
    • Easy to make. Just one pot needed and less than 30 minutes!
    • Easy to customize. Switch out the dark chocolate for milk chocolate if you want a sweeter drink. Use fewer earl grey tea bags if you only want a kiss of earl grey flavour or use more if you like an intense flavour. Add more chocolate for an even richer experience.

    Ingredient notes

As always, the fullย recipe cardย with ingredient amounts and instructions is at the bottom of this post! Keep reading for more details on each ingredient or skip ahead to theย recipe.

    • Milk - You can use any dairy or non-dairy milk you prefer.
    • Heavy cream - You can use whipping cream for a thinner and lighter consistency or heavy cream for a thicker and richer hot chocolate. To make this drink completely dairy-free, replace this with full-fat coconut milk.
    • Earl grey tea bags - Tea bags are the easiest but loose leaf tea also works.
    • Milk or dark chocolate - I would recommend a good quality chocolate like Lindt or Valrhona for the best hot chocolate. I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate because the milk and cream already gives the drink some sweetness but it's entirely up to you! Don't use more than 70% dark chocolate though unless you prefer it slightly bitter (we're not adding any additional sugar). The chocolate should be very finely chopped to ensure it all melts smoothly.

Tips for making the best earl grey hot chocolate

    • Use good quality chocolate. Since the chocolate is the star of the show and the most important ingredient in hot chocolate (you're essentially drinking melted chocolate!), you'll want to use a good one! Go for a chocolate bar, not baking chocolate or chocolate chips.
    • Squeeze the tea bags before discarding. Make sure you squeeze out all the tea-infused liquid in the the tea bags before discarding them because that's where all the flavour is!
    • Melt the chocolate on low heat. The residual heat from the cream after steeping the tea is enough to melt the chocolate if it's finely chopped enough. Otherwise, keep the mixture on low heat while you're melting the chocolate to prevent it from seizing or burning.

The first time I mixed Earl Grey with hot chocolate was in 1988 . I fell in love with it. I tried several other types of tea as well, but there was something special about Earl Grey. I'm glad others have found it too.
