This super creamy whipped matcha latte or dalgona matcha is a trendy and aesthetic drink that's perfect for warm mornings.

Inspired by the recent viral drink, dalgona coffee, this version uses matcha powder instead of instant coffee. It features the same iconic fluffy, whipped cream on top of a milk base. Call it dalgona matcha, if you will, or essentially just a whipped matcha latte. Either way, this drink is easy to make and tastes delicious.

Unlike dalgona coffee, matcha powder doesn't whip up on its own like instant coffee or espresso powder does. To make this dalgona matcha, you'll be adding whipping cream to get it to its iconic fluffy, whipped consistency.

How to make a whipped matcha latte

In a medium bowl, mix together the matcha powder and about 6 tablespoons of the whipping cream. Mix thoroughly until no lumps of matcha remain. Try smushing the matcha against the sides of the bowl to break it up.

Mixing matcha powder with whipped cream

Add in the rest of the whipping cream and sugar. Use a hand mixer or whisk to whip the mixture until it becomes soft peaks. The matcha cream should be creamy and hold its shape when stirred around or lifted with a spoon.

Fill a glass halfway with milk and ice. Spoon the whipped matcha cream on top of the milk. Stir together before drinking.

Tips for making the best whipped matcha latte

    • The matcha cream itself will be quite strong and it's supposed to be! It will become diluted after mixing it with the milk. If you prefer it even stronger, don't be afraid to add a bit more matcha powder.
    • Make sure to whisk out all the lumps in your matcha powder to get a smooth, creamy latte. I did this by whisking it with small amounts of cream first so that any lumps can be smushed against the glass instead of floating around in too much liquid.
    • Ceremonial grade matcha will give you a darker and more intense green colour and a stronger matcha taste. I've used regular matcha meant for baking here and it still tastes good but use ceremonial grade if you have it. You will be able to use less matcha too if yours is more concentrated.
